What about when you sign up for life insurance only to find out you cant get it because google sold your location to the insurance co. complete with logs of you going to (or near) the liquor store on a daily basis. Or the clinic.

Not necessarily, it could be a loss leader. Apple's margin on products is generally 35%, however.I was just about to post about this likely being a loss leader. They're generating buzz and traffic in their stores. Their losses on the iPad are designed to turn profit on other sales.

Who needs a new iphone every year? Let alone every 2 years? I just got an iphone 4 and it's so much more advanced than certainly any phone that I've ever had (and probably more advanced than most phones out there), that I don't see anyone needing to replace it ever unless it brakes.

I have one of the newer mac mini's (server) with the HDMI out port on it. I am using the machine as a home theatre pc.
Friday night I rented a HD movie from Itunes and attempted to play it on my 50 inch plasma. I received the message that my display is not HDCP compliant and that I could not play the vidoe.
I looked up the specs on my Samsung PN50A650 and found the following statement about HDCP that states the display is HDCP compatible. The only other issue that may come into play, was that I had my EyeTV HD recorded plugged in at the time, I disconnected the device, but the video still did not play.
Does anyone know why I can not display the HDCP media? Is there a test file I can use for troubleshooting since the rental has expired? (Apple refunded my money by the way)

transmission of digital audio and video signals using a single cable.
� The difference between HDMI and DVI is that the HDMI device is smaller in size and
has the HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) coding feature installed.
➢ Each DVD Player or Cable Box / Satellite receiver (Set-Top Box) has a different
back panel configuration.
➢ The TV may not output sound and pictures may be displayed with abnormal color
when DVD Player or Cable Box / Satellite receivers supporting HDMI versions

is no sound, connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI IN 2 jack and the audio cables

But what if torturing a person who is involved in the plans of a terrorist attack could prevent thousands of deaths?
Torturing would never be a good action, but it is like killing someone to defend yourself, killing is bad, but the result of killing saved your life.
In the case of torture, it is the government defending its people (country). If it can be avoided better, but I would rather authorize torture instead of letting attacks happen.
EDIT: As with everything, every single case needs to be analyzed separately.
But there is absolutely no guarantee or, to my knowledge, no proof that torture results in any useful intelligence whatsoever. And killing someone to save your own life is defending yourself. Not sure how torture could ever be considered an act of self-defense.

I have found this very useful in different circs. It runs 'on the top' of any application and takes up little processor
* take a funny quote from a DVD and use it as a system-beep
* record internet radio to listen to later
etc.
I'll second this emotion - I do some side DJ work, and this app is great for ripping samples and remixing when I'm dropping stuff to CDs. Grab the sound in WireTap, convert it to anything from AIFF to MP3 in Sound Studio, and mix it with either Sound Studio or Peak. I've sampled everything from Ghostbusters (Annie Potts, "Ghostbusters, what do you want!?") to Ronald Reagan (all his quotes about aliens to mix with Blondie's "Rapture") with this app -- it's a lot of fun to use and completely free. I wouldn't use it for heavy duty audio, but for sampling and quick rips it's great.

nice! what speed are you running at now? still 4.4 ghz?
4.5 now. Higher than that it starts to become less and less efficient. I can run at full load at minimal increased heat and power consumption over the stock 3.8 turbo. 4.6 and up on this chip starts to require more juice.

Not true.. I am the Art Director for a Art department that makes grocery store ads.
Soda is not a common loss leader since it's DSD Pepsi/Coke keep close price controls.
I usually see produce and meat used as loss leaders..
All food margins are bad for grocery stores...they end up making the most money off of their non-food items...which is why you often see a growing number of non-food aisles.
Another point... I expect that TJ MAXX just bought up a bunch of the Refurbished iPads and is taking a $50 loss on each to get people in the stores.

Well they did pay money for it. They are probably losing between $70-$100 on each iPad.

I seriously doubt the figure of "80 iPads total" aquired by TJ Maxx that is speculated in the article, but who knows.
I think he meant 8,000. I did the math myself. All you do is count the number of stores east of colorado or so. I estimate 50%-60% of stores got 10 iPads each...throw in some Marshalls stores...and you get between 5,000 - 10,000 iPads.
(notice how some Marshalls stores are holding off on their iPads until Black Friday...maybe they are apple users who actually figure out they have a prized possession...i can see most managers just saying..what are these ipads..lets just give them away).
